Gifts for Programmers: Funny Mugs, Shirts and Totes

Built on the jokes engineers already tell each other, so they land.

The best gifts for programmers are a line they have already said out loud. Pick something true to their week, keep it short, and let the object do the rest. Here are ideas by occasion, and a few rules for keeping the joke sharp.

Lines that work

On a mug. "It works on my machine." "Stand-up is at 9:15." "No, I did not try turning it off and on again." Mugs are used every day, so the line gets repeated.

On a shirt. "Shipped it." "Friday deploy, no regrets." "Will review in the morning." A short line on the chest does more than a diagram nobody can read.

On a tote. A joke about a code review, a ticket number, or the one meeting that could have been a message. Totes are carried into meetings, which is the point.

Gifts by occasion

A new job. Something light, like a mug with a short line about the first week.

A promotion. A shirt or tote with a line that is slightly too proud, so it is funny.

A team gift. One shared joke on a mug for everyone, with the year, so it becomes the team's.

The on-call survivor. A mug with a calm line about a quiet night.

Rules for the joke

Keep it short. Anything more than six words gets skimmed. Keep it true: a line that is almost right is worse than a plain one. Skip other people's trademarks and catchphrases, since they age badly and add nothing. And test it on a colleague first: if they smile without an explanation, it is ready.

Make it without learning design

Tell Pablit's design assistant who the gift is for and the line you have in mind. It makes the design, shows it on the product, and you change it in plain words. Each item is made to order, one at a time, with no minimum order.
